November 14th, 2007 Troubadour in Hollywood, CA – Another great night for UK acts Athlete and up and coming Gemma Hayes. On tour for their 2007 release Beyond the Neighbourhood, the band were on a short US tour and LA was the last pit stop. Having seen Athlete in large capacities in the UK, the Troubadour in Hollywood is a great venue to see these boys because of its intimacy and feels like a step back into their earlier days of gigging in a pub.
Despite the usual late start, Gemma Hayes began the show with her soulful and soothing voice. With her hair swept back, an acoustic guitar in hand, the Irish singer captivated the audience with her folk style songs and of course the accent. Despite lulling us into a light daze with her sweet melody and shy disposition, Hayes is endearing and compels you to want to listen more.
Following Hayes’ set, Athlete arrive on-stage with cheers from the audience. With new songs from their third album and hits from the past, the boys put on a good show. The arrangement for the band was also different during this show (bassist Carey Willetts had to fly back to the UK after suffering pneumonia) and the addition of guitarist Jonny Pilcher who is featured on the new album. Lead singer, Joel Pott, has a great energy on-stage and even throws his guitar around like a maniac rock star.
Overall, this was a great show and I’m keen to see more of them when they are back in early 2008. The fact is, their earlier stuff still rocks the socks off their new album but this is still a great band to see perform and I would highly recommend you see them next year.
