An interview with ACM's Shaun, Dillon, Mark, and Collin during their tour with Senses Fail and New Found Glory.
What's it been like touring with artists like New Found Glory, Senses Fail, and Receiving end of Sirens?
Collin: Well, It’s a pretty big tour, but I guess it’s a small tour in terms of dates. All the guys in the bands are really cool and its weird crossing the borderline between growing up and listening to them and now meeting them, talking to them and developing friendships. It’s been really fun.
How did you come up with the band name?
Collin: One time, I was in Mammoth and it snowed a lot the night before. I was locked outside of the cabin we were in and I really had to go to the bathroom, so I started urinating in the snow and I realized you could only urinate in cursive. That was always a fun memory of mine, so A Cursive Memory.
Can you tell the readers what Bandarazzi.com is and why the band started it?
Shaun: Bandarazzi is a project we’re working on right now where we go out to the streets of la between the hours of 10pm to about 3am and we harass celebrities. We have an old school ghetto blaster that we put up on our shoulder and we play our song “Everything” and we sing the words, and we try to get as many celebrities in our video as possible and either they love it or hate it or they try not to respond. Its fun messing with celebs, so far we have a list of 30 and counting.
Name some big ones you have.
Collin: Britney Spears.
What can we expect from the new cd that is to be released on vagrant records?
Shaun: Its twelve songs long.
Collin: Its twelve songs long, it’s going to be out on vagrant records. I think the release date is Feb. 19 but it is not completely definite yet. We just mastered it and we’re really happy with how it turned out and proud of our first record. We’re excited for it and for everybody to hear it. Shaun: The artwork is being done right now too.
How did you land a gig on the TV show The Simple Life?
Shaun: Our friend Hunter was a counselor on the show and he really liked a song of ours called “Perfect Company”. Basically the whole season he tried to win over Paris because he likes her a lot and he asked us to perform a song.
What are your musical Influences?
Mark: Blink-182.
< Shaun: creed
< Mark: Savage Garden
< Collin: Hinder
< Shaun: Limp Bizkit. Godsmack. Papa Roach
< Mark: Actually, Papa Roach is a big influence of mine. I’m serious.
You guys played a showcase for South by Southwest festival, how was that?
Mark: Yeah, about two years ago. That is the only time we have played that. It was a lot of fun; I mean it was our first time out of California.
Shaun: We played with Pink Spider and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
You started at a young age (Jr. high) and have worked really hard, do you feel like you missed on certain things in high school while you were pursing music?
Collin: I think high school was more difficult because we were doing this because there is a lot of stuff conflicting with each other, but I really don’t think, as far as our high school experience goes, that we missed out on anything. I think if anything, we gained more than the other people we were going to high school with because we had this whole other part of our life’s going on parallel to it.
Shaun: Its not like we weren’t in school. Its not like we dropped out. We were there pretty much everyday. If anything it kind of got us out of some times when we didn’t want to go to school and we had stuff going on. It was sweet because we didn’t have to go to school. For me it was sweet, because I hardly ever had to go and I hated high school.
What can we expect from the live shows?
Mark: A lot of up-tempo, energetic, happy smiles.
Shaun: Expect some covers, some funny covers of other songs.
Collin: Expect real serious professionals.
Mark, how do you play the piano and bass at the same time? That is pretty amazing.
Mark: I don’t actually. I’m just kidding. Basically with my right hand I play piano and with my left had I play bass.
Was it hard to learn?
Mark: No, the reason why that whole thing started was because we really didn’t want another person in our band, so I was just like ‘Maybe I can mess around with parts of our songs’-play piano, play bass at the same time. It started off not too serious but then it just developed into that. I don’t really like it but its kind of different and cool. It’s worked.
Message to the fans.
Dillion: Don’t do school, stay in milk and drink your drugs.
Shaun: Check out bandarazzi.com. Our album comes out in Feb, keep looking for that and check out our myspace- myspace.com/acursivememory.
