Interview with The Spill Canvas
drummer Joe...…
Why
don't we start with you guys introducing yourselves.
Joe,
I'm the Drummer of The Spill Canvas.
How
and when did you all meet to form the band? And
where did the name for the band, The Spill Canvas,
come from?
Nick
and I went to high school together. Dan and I were
in a band together before TSC all got together and
Scott was a friend of Nick's through his old band,
Nodes of Ranvier. As far as the name's origin, Nick
had various lyric journals where he just writes
various thoughts and phrases that he wants to expand
on. The canvas definately originated from Braid's
"Frame and Canvas" and the whole phrase
just kind of came together after that.
How
would you describe your music?
We
like to just use the term Rock because we really
don't think that we can be defined as one definite
genre like emo or alt rock or indie rock or whatever,
so a safe generalization is Rock.
My
personal favorite is your Staplegunned song. What
is your favorite song on your "One Fell Swoop
album"?
My
personal favorite on the record is either Bound
to Happen or Lusta Prima Vista. On Bound to Happen,
we really got to expirement with various drum sounds
and guitar sounds. This song really came together
in a short amount of time and everything just seemed
to flow. Lusta Prima Vista was one of the first
ones we wrote and we loved the way it came out on
the recording. It's just a nice, solid, rock song.
Musically,
who's inspiring to you guys?
Collectively,
we draw major influences from Saves the Day, Jimmy
Eat World, Death Cab for Cutie, Nickel Creek, Killswitch
Engage, Atmosphere, Maria Mena, and Say Anything.
We try hard to listen to many many different kinds
of music.
What
has been your favorite venue to play at thus far?
The
House of Blues in L.A. was absolutely amazing. But
personally, it was awesome to play the SOMA in San
Diego where Blink 182 played there first show. That
was just big for me.
What
crucial things have you learned about the music
business?
It
is a cutthroat business and it takes a lot of tenacity
and persistence to get anywhere and it is an honor
to be as successful as we have become.
I
know you are currently on tour with Copeland. Describe
a day on tour with the TSC.
We
wake up, get showered and all that good stuff and
then we drive to the venue, usually getting to the
venue around 4. We then load all of our equipment
into the venue, set up everything, and run a soundcheck.
Then doors open and we usually try to go grab a
bite to eat before we play. After playing, we hang
out at the merch table, talk to fans, and hang out
and watch the other bands. After the show, we load
out all of our equipment, drive to the next city
or sometimes just get a hotel and crash. It's exhausting,
i don't think people realize that.
What
can we find you doing when you aren't touring or
working on music?
We
practice a lot when we're at home, usually every
day. It takes a lot of practice to keep up with
everything, so we like to keep fresh. Dan is huge
into computers so he's usually doing something w/
that. In between tours, we try to relax as much
as possible because tour requires so much mentally
and physically.
Any
embarrassing on-stage moments?
One
time in dallas, Nick forgot a whole entire bridge
of a song and i tried so hard to keep from laughing
while playing, it was hilarious.
What
has been your most memorable moment in your career
so far?
Going
to Europe was amazing. We went over there with Straylight
Run and the shows were awesome. It was awesome to
see people so far from home sing the words to our
songs. It was incredible.
Anything
else you want to tell our Bandnation.com readers
before you go?
Please
go pick up our latest album "One Fell Swoop"
in stores and come to our shows and hang out with
us. I promse we'll have fun.
