Interview
with Tom of No Trigger...…
Why
don't we start off by you introducing yourself?
Hello
my name is Tom and I sing for the band No Trigger.
For
our readers that might not know of No Trigger, can
you tell us a little more about the Band and describe
your music style?
I
guess we are just a fun-lovin’ guitar slingin’
in your face melodic hardcore band out of central
Massachusetts. We take pride in our commitment to
our bands music and message as well as our ability
to get wasted and talk about other people’s
music and messages. We have relatively strong lyrical
themes but they are more passive than preachy. We
just kind of throw stuff out there, you know? The
music itself ranges from mid-tempo to fast as balls,
but its pretty much driven by melody, catchiness,
and aggression all around. It’s a good time
I swear.
We
know you are the vocals behind the band. Is singing
something you always wanted to do?
I
mean, yeah, singing is pretty great. You get to
be right up with the fans watching you and you can
interact and get into it a lot easier. I guess its
something I’ve always wanted to do, but I
can play guitar and bass pretty well so, I mean,
I wouldn’t mind playing an instrument either.
Sometimes I really wish I had a guitar or drum set
to hide behind on stage, but writing the words and
having people sing along to the words you write
is a very gratifying experience for sure.
We
know you will be releasing your new album "Canyoneer"
at the end of March. What should fans expect when
they buy a copy?
We
actually put a whole lot of time into this record.
It seemed like we spent forever on it, but I couldn’t
be more proud of what we created. We also recorded
it with Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore, so it
sounds basically as good as it can possibly get.
It really sounds huge. Those guys are the kings.
But what should fans expect when they buy it? They
should expect a solid and honest half hour of music.
Nothing less.
Who
are your musical influences?
We
listen to many many different types of music. TONS.
I guess not all of the bands we listen to come through
in what we play, because for the most part we play
fast, aggressive, melodic music. I think its fair
to say we play music much like that of Minor Threat,
Dag Nasty, Descendants, and Kid Dynamite. That sort
of thing.
What
has been your most memorable moment as a band so
far? Where do you see yourselves 5 years down the
road?
This
is a tough question, but a pretty cool memory that
comes to mind would have to be last fall while recording
at the Blasting Room in Colorado. Bill [Stevenson]
one day was like “Hey lets go to my buddies
wedding reception.” So we piled in the van
and drove to Bill’s house and there was a
BBQ and lots of food and music and tons of punks
just drinking and hanging out in Bill’s backyard.
Turns out, it was Chad Price’s wedding reception!
Being at the reception for the singer of ALL while
drinking beer and eating ribs was a pretty memorable
experience. We all felt like heroes. Hah. But 5
years from now, I have absolutely no idea where
we will be. Hopefully we are still making music,
that’s for sure.
How
do you feel knowing your album comes out in less
than a month? Are you nervous, excited, anxious?
I‘m
relieved! We’ve been waiting for what seems
like forever for it to come out (since last October),
so I’m pumped for it to finally hit the shelves.
It also means we will be touring everywhere we can,
which is also a relief. I’m getting pretty
sick of working, and I need to get back on the road.
My
favorite song on the album is "More To Offer."
What is your favorite song on the album and why?
Yeah,
I really like that song a lot as well. Another favorite
of mine is “Bust Tropical”. The lyrics
have a relatively deeper meaning for me and the
song itself is catchy as hell. I think the ending
sounds awesome too. But all in all, every song is
a favorite. We tried not to let any filler slip
in on this record at all. I think we did a pretty
good job of that, but we’ll let others make
that call.
What
can we find you guys doing during your downtime?
You
can find me doing brutal construction work, you
can find Jon selling CDs, you can find one mike
in school and the other mike making drums, and the
other Tom sits around and drinks 40’s and
looks for jobs all day.
We
have a lot of aspiring bands visit BN. What advice
would you give to aspiring bands reading this that
hope to get signed to a label?
Network!
Getting your name out there is the true key to getting
anywhere as a band. Make friends with other bands,
and don’t be assholes. It also helps if you
are honest with your music and you are actually
good at what you do, too. Practice makes perfect,
and just keep sending your demos out to every label
you can. Eventually, things will begin to click.
Anything
else you want to tell our BandNation.com readers
before you go?
Pick
up our new album ‘CANYONEER’ on Nitro
Records on March 21st! And thanks BandNation, you
guys are the best.
