Spotlight: Maria Mena
Sitting and waiting for Maria to call, I sat there listening to her single "You're the Only One". The single is a catchy pop melody that is definitely radio friendly, and has brought people to notice the 18-year old talent. Lyrically bold-- a boldness that would usually be avoided, Maria Mena is one to speak her mind. "I really try not to censor myself, but it has happened. Sometimes when you are in a really dark place, you tend to write some really disturbing stuff," explained Maria.

At a young age, Maria was already a big name in Norway and enjoyed the spotlight that came along with touring and releasing an album. For any artist, transitioning from one country to another usually would be a stressful and nerve racking process. But not for Maria, who took it all in strive. "There were so many people who were really interested in my music and me. So the transition was very cool, and now I am having the time of my life. I can't wait to see what is going to happen next," said Maria.

When I pictured Maria performing live, I saw a scenario of that of Alanis Morisette doing an unplugged show. Little did I know that Maria is a rock star diva at heart. "When you see me with the band though, we really rock out. People come up to me blown away, because they don't expect that.

You won't see me dancing; nothing to distract you from the music. It's me performing my songs," said Mena. About the diva part, she was no holds barred about what she wanted to be remembered for. "I was a natural diva. Not in the sense of money and fame, but I was born a diva." laughed Maria.

No doubt about it, the girl has spunk. She'll definitely charm the states!

This month, Maria Mena.
How has the Teen People tour going?
It is going very well, we are almost at the end of it. I didn't know what to expect because we don't have that mall culture in Norway, so I didn't know what a mall tour was. It is pretty cool; people are actually showing up to see me. So I am very much enjoying that.
So were you nervous about doing the whole crossing over to the states?
You know I was, but there were so many people who were really interested in my music and me. So the transition was very cool, and now I am having the time of my life. I can't wait to see what is going to happen next.

Now you are 18, but you actually got really famous in Norway when you were young. How was it growing up in the spotlight?

It wasn't really difficult. I had a great time, especially the year were promoting and touring. After that I had this period when I doubted my own talent and I didn't know if I could make another record. It turns out I could, and that is this record.
